Randomisation & Prioritisation in Ebola Research & Care

DavidShaw2Dr David Shaw, from University of Basel, Switzerland, will talk about Randomisation & Prioritisation in Ebola Research & Care during Targeting Ebola World Congress 2015.

According Dr Shaw: "Two key ethical issues are raised by the current outbreak of Ebola in Africa: randomization in research; and prioritization of participants for inclusion in trials, and of patients for scarce treatments. With regard to the role of randomized controlled trials in evaluating new treatments and vaccines designed to combat Ebola, I will argue that randomization is essential and can be ethical given good trial design.

With regard to prioritization, I will argue that healthcare workers should be prioritized both for inclusion in trials and for “rule of rescue” or compassionate-use treatment.  Furthermore, local healthcare workers should be prioritized over foreign healthcare workers where necessary."
